Nasdaq opens higher as tech names gain after Anthropic files for IPO

US stocks opened higher on Monday, with technology shares in green after Anthropic publicly filed for its much-anticipated initial public offering.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 212 points, or 0.4%, while the S&P 500 rose 0.3%. The Nasdaq Composite also advanced 0.3%.

The positive start to the week follows two consecutive weekly declines for the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite. Friday’s session was particularly weak, with all three major indexes ending the week lower.

Anthropic IPO filing lifts mood

Anthropic on Monday publicly filed its S-1 registration statement, giving investors a closer look at the artificial intelligence company’s financial performance ahead of its initial public offering.

The company is set to trade under the ticker symbol ANT.

Anthropic reported $16.3 billion in revenue for the six-month period ended in June, significantly more than the $4.6 billion it generated during the whole of 2025.

The company also reported a loss of $80.7 billion in the first half of 2026.

The filing has put the company’s financial performance under greater scrutiny as investors assess the prospects of one of the biggest names in the AI industry.

Other major technology stocks also moved higher. Nvidia gained 1.9%, while Micron jumped 2%. Intel rose 1%, and Advanced Micro Devices climbed 0.73%.

Oil retreats as diplomatic efforts offer relief

Crude prices fell over 1% on Monday as renewed diplomatic efforts to ease the US-Iran conflict offered some relief after last week’s rally.

Brent crude dropped 1% to $115.42 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate fell 1.72% to $101.45.

Brent had gained about 6% over the previous week as attacks on Saudi Arabia heightened concerns about regional energy supplies.

Qatari mediators travelled to Tehran on Sunday in an effort to reduce tensions with Washington, encouraging traders to pare back some of the premium attached to the risk of oil supply disruptions.

However, the security situation remains unsettled. The Iran-aligned Houthis said they had attacked Saudi airport and oil facilities over the weekend, while Saudi authorities reported intercepting additional missiles and drones.

Musk warns of neocloud failures, Brazilian stocks slide

Shares of major neocloud companies CoreWeave, Nebius and IREN fell in premarket trading after Elon Musk warned that more than 200 companies in the sector could face failures and consolidation as financing becomes harder to obtain.

“As of the past few weeks, debt markets have almost entirely shut off access to money for any company that doesn’t have substantial revenue independent of AI data centers,” Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, said in a post on X on Sunday.

“That means the 200+ neoclouds are going to see guppy-level death and consolidation. Some will make it through, but not many,” he added.

IREN shares fell roughly 2%, while CoreWeave dropped around 2.2% and Nebius declined more than 4.4%.

US-listed Brazilian stocks also came under pressure after Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won Brazil’s presidential election.

Petrobras plunged 16% in early trading, Itaú Unibanco fell 21%, and brewer Ambev dropped 12%. Mining company Vale declined 1.72%, while aircraft manufacturer Embraer lost roughly 3%.
